Getting Started

Getting Started With Adult Day Care in Pennsylvania

Starting takes three steps: a phone call, a tour and assessment, and a start date. Most families ask about cost first, so this page also covers whether Medicaid pays for adult day care in Pennsylvania and which other programs help.

What to Expect

The First Call
We ask which hours need covering, what health support is involved, and where you live, then tell you which program fits and what funding to look into.
The Assessment
Staff review health conditions, medications, mobility, dietary needs, and interests. Bring the medication list and any recent discharge or physician paperwork.
The First Days
We confirm the days of attendance, the transportation stop, and the care plan before day one, then check in with you after the first few days.

Day One

Your First Day

What to Bring
A current medication list, emergency contact numbers, insurance or waiver information, comfortable clothing and closed shoes, and any mobility device or glasses and hearing aids that are used daily.
What Happens on Arrival
Staff meet the participant at the van or door, introduce them to the group and to the staff member assigned to them, walk them through the building, and start them on a morning activity.
How Families Get Updates
Staff tell you how the first day went, including what the participant ate, which activities they joined, and anything they want changed. Call us during program hours any time after that.

How Much Does Adult Day Care Cost?

Adult day care cost depends on the program and on how many days a week the participant attends. Many families pay little or nothing out of pocket, because Pennsylvania Medicaid long-term services programs cover the day rate for eligible participants. We review your options with you during the assessment, and private pay is available.

Payment

Paying for Care

Adult day care cost is often covered for eligible participants through a Pennsylvania Medicaid long-term services program. Veterans benefits, Area Agency on Aging programs, and long-term care insurance also pay in many cases, and families can pay privately. Eligibility depends on the program and the county, so our staff check the options with you before you commit.
